Navigating the map workspace

The map workspace is where you work on your mind map. It contains the following elements:

A ribbon containing all commands for editing, formatting, viewing and exporting your mind map. The commands are organized into tabs such as Home, Insert and View.

The Pictures, Icons, Time, Research and Text tabs. You can click these to display the Pictures, Icons, Time or Research panel and the text editor.

The MindView Online button for closing the currently open mind map and accessing the Backstage view.

The User  and Language  buttons for accessing user and administrator options, changing the user interface language and logging out of MindView Online.

Minimizing the ribbon

You can minimize the ribbon so that only the tab names are visible. This can be an advantage when working with large mind maps, as it frees up some space in the map workspace.

To minimize the ribbon, click Hide the ribbon at the right side of the ribbon.

The commands on all ribbon tabs are hidden. You can still access the commands by clicking the name of the tab you want to use.

To maximize the ribbon so that the commands are always visible, click Show the ribbon at the right side of the ribbon.

Showing, hiding and resizing panels

You can show or hide the Pictures, Icons, Time or Research panels and the text editor as needed.

When the panels and the text editor are not in use, hiding them will make more room in the map workspace.

Show or hide the panels or the text editor by doing one of the following:

Choose View and click the button corresponding to the panel or text editor you want to show or hide.

Click the tab corresponding to the panel you want show or hide on the right of the map workspace.

The Pictures, Icons, Time or Research panels cannot be visible at the same time; only one can be shown at a time.

Resize the Pictures, Icons, Time or Research panel by placing the mouse pointer on the edge of the panel until it changes to a horizontal double arrow and then dragging the edge to the desired location.

Resizing one panel will also resize all others. In other words, if you change the size of the Icons panel, the Time, Pictures and Research panels will be the same size as the resized Icons panel, and vice versa.

Resize the text editor by placing the mouse pointer on the edge of the panel until it changes to a vertical double arrow and then dragging the edge to the desired location.

For more information on using the panels and the text editor, see "Using the Pictures panel", "Inserting icons", "Entering time and task information", "Inserting items from the Research panel" and "Inserting text notes".

Moving dialogs

You can move any dialog in the map workspace by hovering the mouse over its title bar until it changes into a four-headed arrow . Click and hold down the mouse button and drag the dialog to the desired position.

Using access keys

In the map workspace, you can use the keyboard to access menu options. Simply press and release the Ctrl button and then press the letter shown for the tab you want. To access the Insert tab in the map workspace, for example, press and release Ctrl and then press I.

On the selected tab, press the letter shown for the menu option you want to use. To access the Branch command after selecting the Insert tab, for example, press B.

You can also use access keys to open the Backstage view and access the commands in it, for example to print the currently open mind map. To do so, press and release Ctrl and press F to open the Backstage view, then select the menu option you want.

To access menu options in MindView Online in this way, remember to release the Ctrl button. When viewing, navigating and editing a mind map, you can use a number of other keyboard shortcuts where you need to hold down Ctrl and other keys; for a full list of shortcuts, see "Keyboard shortcuts". In addition, you may be able to use browser keyboard shortcuts by holding down the Ctrl or Alt button.

You can see a list of some frequently used MindView Online keyboard shortcuts by pressing Alt + A in the map workspace.
